Introduction to the Program

The Oriental Studies program offers students profound knowledge and understanding of the major cultures such as Japan, Korea, East Asia, and Southeast Asia. In addition to language learning, students will acquire fundamental knowledge in history, geography, economy, society, and culture of East Asian countries.

Curriculum Content

With an emphasis on practical training, in addition to the general knowledge of the field, students have the option to specialize in either Japanese Studies or Korean Studies. Students are trained to proficiently use language skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing within their chosen specialization, as well as master the foundational knowledge specific to each country to work in multicultural environments, including:

  • In-depth knowledge about the country (language, history, culture, geography, economy, etc.).
  • Professional skills in translation and interpretation, tourism, commerce, teaching, etc.
  • Personal skills: adaptation to living environments, teamwork, communication, and behavior in multicultural settings.
  • Technical skills: identifying, classifying data and information about the study area and country, laying the groundwork for creative thinking; analyzing and synthesizing multidisciplinary, multilingual data sources; international relations and social communication skills.

The standard training duration is 4 years with 134 credits, and students can choose a 3-year program with 9 semesters to graduate early.
